In Hinduism, Lord Ram is regarded as the incarnation of God (Lord Vishnu) himself. Shri Ram Katha is the recitation of the life story of Lord Rama. Tulsidasji, a great devotee of Rama, describes Ram Katha as ras (enjoyment/energy) and consider listening and reading Ram Katha as a highest form of devotion to Lord Rama.
The Ramayana, an epic poem, was first written from memory (smiriti) by sage Valmiki in the Sanskrit language. Many years later, Goswami Tulsidas, born in the 16th century, penned the Ramcharitamanas. Ramayana is widely-read and idolized not only in India but through Asia. It has not only served as poetry but also the embodiment of principles and the ideal of life , as the basis for plays and rituals, festivals, as an eternal tale of love and duty and as the foundation for religion.
The Ramcharitmanasa is divided into stanzas called chaupais, passages of which are interposed with couplets or dohas. It is filled with exemplary poetry and comprises of seven chapters :

- Aranya Kand
- Kiskindha Kand
- Sundar Kand
- Lanka Kand
- Uttar Kand
