Janeu Sanskar (Upanayan Sanskara)
Through “Upanayan Sanskara” or “Janeu Sanskar”, brahmins celebrate the development or “new birth” of a boy. The most favored time for this ceremony is between the ages of seven and fourteen. Due to any reason, if the ceremony couldn’t take place all through this age period, then it is required to be done before the wedding. The purpose of thread ceremony is to arrange a young man to share the responsibilities of elders.
The thread is worn by a man within the company of a group chant of ‘Gayatri’ mantra. The ceremony also suggests that the wearer of ‘Janeu’ can now participate in the family rituals, henceforward.
Significance of three strands in Janeu Sanskar
The three strands of the sacred thread represent three debts of man that should never be forgotten. They are:
- The debt of one’s parents and ancestors
- The debt of the scholars
- The debt of one’s teacher
A married person should wear two threads, a bachelor is supposed to wear one thread and if a married person has a kid then he should wear three threads. The 3 strands of the thread also symbolize the three Goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati and Saraswati and alludes to the fact that a person can become complete with the grace of these three deities of wealth, strength and knowledge respectably.
The strands of the thread also stand for words, thoughts and deeds of the wearer. Hence wearing the sacred thread is extraordinarily important in Hinduism as it marks the start of education for the kid.
