Description

Ramayana is an important religious text for all Hindus. It sheds light on the life of Sri Ram, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is divided into seven parts. Of these, Sundarkand is of paramount importance to Hindus.

The Sundarkand recitation has many benefits as it helps people find fulfillment and happiness in life. Therefore if complete recitation of Ramayana is not possible, then at least SundarKand must be recited.

Sundarkand sings the praises of Sri Ram. Whoever hears it with devotion gets salvation without putting much efforts. The seven parts of the Ramayana have been compared with seven pilgrimages that lead to salvation – Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika Puri (Ujjain) and Dvarvati (Dwarka). Which is why, recitation of Sundarkand is similar to pilgrimage.

Sundarkand is a beautiful verbal description of Sri Ram. It consists of three shlokas (hymns of praise), 60 dohe (couplets), six chhand (metres) and 526 chaupai (Hindu poetic metre). The first 30 of the 60 couplets are related to the qualities of Sri Ram and and remaining 30 is related to the description and character of Sri Hanuman. Sri Hanuman is the chief character in Sunderkand. Sundarkand recitation benefits a lot to a person having mental uneasiness to attain peace and harmony.

Sri Ram’s ambassador Hanuman’s strength, wisdom and knowledge have been magnificently described in Sundarkand. How Hanuman was able to cross the ocean in one leap with the grace of Lord Ram and how he defeated Lankini (guardian to the doors of Lanka) and managed to enter Lanka have been beautifully narrated in Sundar Kand. How gracefully he described Sri Ram’s longing for Sita that greatly reduced Sita’s sorrow and make her forgot her own pangs of loneliness due to separation from her husband has been beautifully described in Sundar Kand. On meeting Ravana, he uses the policy of differentiation and discrimination. He showed the Ravana the correct path to win the favor of the Supreme God. After getting Sita’s blessings, he returns to Sri Ram and motivates him to prepare for war.

Power of Sundarkand

In addition to the beauty and inspiration of the verses, this puja helps one attain spiritual fulfillment and peerless spiritual knowledge. Devotees chant the Sundarkand as an unfailing ritual and seek the blessings of Sri Hanuman. Poverty and sorrow can be surmounted through regular chanting of SundarKand and it then becomes unavoidable duty of Lord Hanuman to protect his devotees form obstacles and hurdles and bless him with success and happiness. Devotion and Faith are the key factors.
