The ninth house in a person’s natal chart is dedicated to his/her father, ancestors, fate and fortune. A conjunction of Sun and Rahu in this house and certain other planetary combinations indicate Pitra Dosh and stamp out all auspicious signs from the house of luck. Pitra Dosh in a horoscope means that a person’s ancestor is not pleased or gratified with him or that he has not done enough for him. It points to the fact that a person’s ancestor is dissatisfied with him due to some reason. In a situation, when a family member has died an unnatural death and if someone has not offered homage to the departed soul, he/she becomes inflicted with Pitra Dosha. This Dosha makes the life of a person miserable and he finds himself in a tight spot if it is not pacified. It can have many detrimental effects on a person and he suffers many undesired consequences including:

- Law suits
- Inability to conceive
- Difficulties on the career front
The person who suffers from Pitru Dosh will always run out of luck and wrestles with problems in nearly every front in life.

Pitra Dosh Remedies or Upaya
Shraddh
Performing a shraddh ceremony during Pitru Paksha is known to mitigate the bad effects of Pitra Dosha. During shraddh ceremony, invite people as well as holy man to attend the feast. The feast is held to fulfill the unrequited desires of departed souls and help them on their way to higher realms. Feeding people during the Pitru Paksh not only helps departed ancestors but also the performer is also liberated from past karma. For the same reason there is a tradition of feeding beggars and cows.
Brahmin Bhoj
During this period you can feed as many brahmins as you can so that their blessings will accrue to their departed ancestors. On the day, consider Brahmins as your departed ancestors and offer them delectable and wholesome food. Be hospitable to them and treat them with respect as you would treat your departed ones. Give them some “Dakshina”(fees) . Touch their feet and seek their blessings.
Tarpan
Tarpan refers to the offering of water to gods, sages and the souls of ancestors. Religious scriptures describe donating water as the highest punya (Good Deeds). Tarpan is performed on the bank of river or lake. Offering of water (tarpan) to deities is done using finger tips however to the souls of ancestors tarpan is done using thumb and first finger of the hand.
Pind Daan
Pind Daan is yet another powerful vedic remedy to subdue bad effects of Pitra Dosh. A handful of cooked rice is mixed with sesame seeds and shaped into balls. Touch the rice balls, invoke your ancestors and meditate on them. Sprinkle some black seasame seeds along with water on pinda, add some curd on the ball. Lastly, offer some flowers and sandalwood paste to this pinda and respectfully place it where animals or birds can eat it.
Pitra Sukt Puja
Pitra Sukt Puja is another potent Pitra Dosh removing ‘upay’ which is done on Chathurdashi and Amavasya (No Moon). Additionally, chanting Gayatri Mantra and gazing at the Sun at Sunrise can buttress the position of the sun in the horoscope and helps cut down the impact of Pitra Dosha in one’s life.

Pitra Dosh Nivaran puja should include chanting of Pitra Dosh Nivaran Mantra to pacify the souls of the departed ones.
